‘Working With Children Checks’ have become a requirement for ALL STAFF at Interaction, not just staff working directly with children.  Samantha Hiley, Interaction’s Human Resources Manager, tells us why….

Interaction has always been committed to providing a child safe environment. To ensure an even higher level of governance when it comes to working with children, a decision has been made that ALL STAFF are to obtain and maintain a current Working with Children Check (WWCC) as part of their employment. Interaction staff have been notified and steps are currently underway
to ensure those who have not yet completed the Check, do so in a timely manner.

Although WWCC’s are not a legal requirement for those who do not work directly with children (eg admin staff), Interaction is a person-centred organisation, and prefers to take every step necessary to ensure minimal risk factors when it comes to the safety of children who we provide our services to.

The Working With Children Check assesses an applicant’s national criminal history. The records include:
– convictions (spent or unspent);
– charges (whether heard, unheard or dismissed);
– juvenile records.

Here are the steps Interaction takes – and regularly reviews – to ensure we continue to be fully compliant with all WWCC obligations:
– Interaction is registered online with the Office of the Children’s Guardian;
– Interaction’s HR Department can be contacted in regards to any matters of
concern;
– All positions advertised clearly state the requirement of the WWCC;
– All staff will have a valid WWCC number, which will be verified online;
– Administration practices include record keeping systems which meet
legislative requirements;
– Mandatory reporting guidelines and procedures are in place if a
worker is barred, becomes barred, or refuses to obtain a WWCC;
– Interaction understands the responsibility of reporting
misconduct involving children to the Office of the Children’s
Guardian;
– Staff are aware of their responsibilities and understand
the processes.
