Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) Awareness Month happens each year globally in May, with orange being well known in the PWS community as the colour that represents.

PWS is a rare and complex genetic condition.  It is non-inherited, and linked to the deletion or incompleteness of genes on the 15th chromosomes. The hypothalamus (part of the brain which controls hunger, thirst and hormones related to growth and sexual development) does not function properly in people with PWS. This disruption in functioning causes uncontrollable hunger, lack of satiety, stunted growth, under developed sex hormones, poor sleep cycles and much more.  Virtually no system within the body and mind is left untouched when this tiny amount of genetic material is found to be missing, duplicated, or altered.  Without the right support, the average lifespan for a person with PWS is between 20-30.

Interaction is a leader in Australia when it comes to providing internationally recognised best practice services and supports in relation to PWS.  We opened the first PWS accommodation facility back in 1992, and now have a range of PWS accommodation facilities within our portfolio.

No better time than during PWS awareness month for Interaction to announce the new upcoming addition to its PWS accommodation portfolio – a new house soon to be built on the NSW Central Coast!

It has been many months in the making, working with Hotondo Homes to finalise plans for this purpose built ‘Transitional Living’ home – a home that will accommodate three young adults with PWS.  The build will commence in the coming months, with two vacancies having already been confirmed. One vacancy remains!  If you are interested please complete our PWS Vacancy Expression of Interest Form.  The build will commence in the coming months, and to celebrate we’ve committed to ensuring all donations made to Interaction during May will go towards building of the PWS home on the Central Coast.
